Settlement Patterns of Wellesley Township

Wellesley Township is bisected by Hutchison Road to form two sections: the Eastern Section and the Western Section. When the township was first surveyed in 1842-1843 by William Walker, approximately 142 families were already "squatting" on the land, almost 80% of them in the Eastern Section. After the survey, the land was opened up for settlement and many new arrivals chose to settle among people of similar ethnic and religious backgrounds.
