  • Served 3 years apprenticeship in the harness trade in Heidelberg, afterwards working at Wellesley Village, Berlin, and Hamilton where "he was employed for three years in what was then one of the largest harness concerns in Canada. The experience received there was the foundation of his future success" (100 years)
  • 1875-opened a business in Heidelberg
  • 1885-appointed issuer of marriage licenses
  • c1894-added hardware and stoves to his business
