Johann “Georg” Hahn (1819-1889) was born in Gersdorf, Kirchheim, Hersfeld, Hesse-Nassau, Prussia Germany. He emigrated from Bremen to New York City in 1839. He left the United States and traveled to Wellesley Township where he applied for 100 acres of Crown Land – Lot 6 Concession VI, Eastern Section.

In 1849 he married Elizabeth Herber (1830-1918). The couple designated a piece of their property on Hessen Road for a log church and cemetery.  Known as the "Hahn Church," it burned down in 1870 and was rebuilt across the road on land belonging to Katherine Reichart – now St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church near Bamberg.

Dianne Wittig would like to share her information about the Hahn and Herber families. If you would like to get in touch with her, please contact us and we will put you in touch with her.
