Achterberg, Charles
|
Charles Achterberg has
resided in
Wellesley since '55, coming that
same year from Friedricksdorf by Falkenburg Hinter Pommern Germany. He built the
building now owned by Mr. Gustav
Woiwade and conducted a
tailoring business there for many years, retiring with a competency in 1887,
when he sold out to his nephew, Mr. Woiwade. Deceased assisted in the
organization of the Miss. Lutheran church and has held a high official position
ever since. Deceased has not been in robust health for the last year and a
light stroke of paralysis last Thursday was sufficient to sap his remaining
strength so that he passed away about four o’clock on Sunday afternoon in his
78th year, survived by his aged widow. The largely attended funeral
occurred yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon.

Allison,
Lucinda
|
The
death of Mrs. Lucinda Allison (mother of the editor of the Maple Leaf) at
Arthur last week at the age of 78 years, removes one of Waterloo township’s
early pioneers. She was a daughter of John Shupe, who lived for sixty years on
the old homestead just up the grand river from Freeport and who died in 1860.
Her grand father, Adam Shupe, came from Pennsylvania with the first settlers,
in about 1800, and his was the first burial in Berlin. Through her father’s numerous
brothers she was connected with many of the old families who came from Pennsylvania
and whose descendants are still numerous and prosperous in Waterloo, many of
them being personally acquainted with her. In 1841 she was, married to Wheeler
Green (brother of Jonah Green, who still lives, hale and hearty, 85 years old,
just north of Preston). Twenty years after her husband’s death she was again
married to A. B. Allison who died at Gorrie last spring. Her other children are
Wm. Green, at Harvey, Ill.; Isaiah Green, at Arthur, and Mrs. George Green, at
Wingham.

ALTEMAN.—In Wellesley, on Friday. June, 19, 1908 at 9:05 p.m.
Eda Margaret Alteman, daughter of Mr. Henry Alteman, aged 16 years, two months and twenty- five days. Miss Eda was an unusually bright girl and a favorite in the village. About a year ago she was taken ill with rheumatism since which time she has been an extreme sufferer in spite of the best care and attention. The funeral occurred on Monday afternoon, a very large number of sorrowing friends attending to show their sympathy with the bereaved family. Among the many floral offerings was a beautiful wreath from the Union Sabbath School, of which the deceased young lady has been a member since her infancy. The pallbearers were Harvey Schaub, Ed Koehler, Fred Froehlich, Oscar Ottmann, Reinhold Yent and John Stahle, all of whom were her school mates. Wellesley Maple Leaf, June 28, 1908. |
